Posting Guidelines and other info

Many of us learn in grammar school about "free speech" and "freedom of expression", a concept stemming from the first amendment to the United States Constitution. Unfortunately, most people have never read the first amendment and fewer still understand how it applies to our rights. In a nutshell, the first amendment prohibits the US government from passing laws restricting our right to free speech. It does not restrict an organization or business from enacting and enforcing standards.

We believe in freedom of expression, the first amendment, and all that. However we are not providing the forum for that freedom. We have rules. They must be honored. If you can not accept it, please do not register.

markviii.org Forum is a community of Lincoln owners and enthusiasts. We have always had standards in the forum and we have a strong belief in the ability of forum members to "self-regulate" to stay within the bounds of those standards. Due to a limited number of volunteer staffing, we are sometimes lax in enforcing them. Still, we have a strong commitment to providing an environment that we consider professional and "family friendly" and we insist on adherence to our principles.

Please note that advertisements, (such as auctions, etc.), chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are inappropriate on the markviii.org Forum.

No requests for information that is "pay-for-service" info. You may not, for example, ask someone to look up your VIN in Carfax®. To do so is a violation of that person's agreement with Carfax and markviii.org Forum will not be a party to that violation.

It is not an easy task to define where "the line" that shouldn't be crossed lies. However we'll do our best to provide an example. Consider the following types of discussions and topics:

  1. Lincoln repair questions and answers
  2. Tips on upgrading a Lincoln for better handling
  3. Relative value of Turbocharging vs. supercharging
  4. Garage talk
  5. Tools
  6. Posts about pets, music, beverages, software, and quite a few other topics where cars aren't the primary subject, except in the appropriate forums (Anything Goes, Book/Movie/Music Review).

  1. Topics which, when opened, contain nothing after the sentence "Ha ha, made you look."
  2. Posts criticizing moderating decisions or forum policies.
  3. Highly divisive, controversial issues such as religion, gun control, politics, etc. There are more appropriate forums on the Net for this.
  4. Discussions about human or other mammalian anatomy and bodily functions.
  5. Posts with the sole goal of inciting flame wars, such as "Don't you think owners of xyz cars are jerks?"
  6. Posts declaring that the mothers of all Lincoln owners are paid to engage in sexual activity.
  7. Posts containing explicit (even if thinly veiled) profanity and/or pornography
  8. Topics about activities which would result in incarceration.

From the list above, it would probably be agreed by anyone that items 1 through 6 are totally acceptable. It would also probably agreed by most reasonable people that items 12 through 14 are not.  What about items 7 through 11? This is the "gray zone" - the area where different people have different levels of tolerance.

For markviii.org's Forum, we consider items 1 through 6 to be acceptable.
Items 7 through 14 are considered off limits.

Unfortunately, determining which side of "the line" a given post falls is not always so simple. Forum moderators have the difficult task of making that judgment call. Hopefully they'll make the decision that is considered "correct" by 95% of the community, but they're human and they will occasionally make mistakes. If you feel that the moderators of a particular forum are making too many mistakes, please contact us with specific details. Do not post complaints, criticisms, or moderation questions on the forum. These posts will be deleted and no explanation will be given.

Our goal is to provide the best possible environment for most Lincoln enthusiasts. We want your visit to markviii.org Forum to be rewarding and sincerely appreciate your patronage of vendors who support the club as well as adherence to our Rules. Have fun and drop us a line with any ideas for improvement or just to say "Hello!"
