"Electric fan. WHich models got a 2-speed and which got Vari"

The Mark VIII fan is a popular swap onto 3rd Gen Mustangs since it pulls a TON of air and is relatively cheap to find used.

Anyway just trying to get a better understanding of the fan.

WHich models got a 2-speed fan and which got variable (high speed only basically when wired right to 12V+)

Also, i understand the 93-96 models pull a little more air than the 97-98 models? That correct?

Interesting questions. The fan wiring & circuitry seems to be biased toward cooling the A/C condenser to regulate pressure in the A/C system, thru the VCRM (variable control relay module) and constant inputs from the ACP (A/C high side pressure sensor), the PCM (power train control module), and the A/C clutch coil circuit. When the A/C clutch is engaged, the fan runs on low, until pressure increases above 150 psi in the A/C high side; the VCRM will then increase fan speed gradually. Also, when the radiator water temperature (with A/C off) gets toward the high end of the normal range, the fan kicks on to full speed, according to the '94 service manual. It's then pumping about 2200 cfm of air at 1800 rpm. The VCRM also shuts off the fan control power completely at a highway speed of 47 mph, an exception being that if the high side A/C pressure is above 300 psi, the fan control continues to operate. The VCRM normally turns power back on at 42 mph.
If I have my A/C on, the fan provides plenty of cooling for the radiator, since the temp gauge constantly runs around the "A" on NORMAL, with a 195º thermostat. Only if I shut the A/C off will the temp go to the high side of "M" (in slow moving traffic). Anyway, here's an interesting conversion for your Mustang & a Mark VIII cooling fan:

I think all Mk 8s had the variable fan and tbird/cougars had the 2 speed.

The Mark VIII has a 2 speed fan but is further controlled by the VCRM by output... Any Mark VIII fan will get you what you want. Just make sure you get a VERY good relay. The fan will pull what you give it.

The install article link I posted earlier also says that an upgrade to a 130A 3G alternator is "also almost mandatory" when doing this fan install on a Mustang. I think if I were doing this retro, I'd use one of the 70A heavy-duty relays for fan power from the battery, just to be sure (with a spare relay kept in the glove box).

Well I already have the 3G 130AMP upgrade on my Mustang and even already have an electric fan from an SN95 Mustang on my car wired with a Bosch 75AMP relay. I have the electrical all set up.

If i come across a Mark VIII fan cheap i plan on using that instead because it's a cleaner install and the SN95 fan and pulls way more air.

I'm just curious to if there was any 2-speed models. In my setup it's all or nothing so basically it will be wired high speed only.
